How to Read a Battery Cell Datasheet
The spec sheet decides whether a cell fits your system. Here are the numbers that actually matter and what they hide.

A cell datasheet is dense with numbers, and not all of them are equally useful. Knowing which figures describe real performance — and under what test conditions — keeps a specification honest.
Nominal capacity and voltage
Capacity (Ah or kWh) is measured at a defined rate and temperature; the same cell rated differently can show different numbers. The nominal voltage window tells you the usable range the BMS must respect.
C-rate and power
C-rate expresses charge/discharge speed relative to capacity (1C = full in one hour). A cell's allowable C-rate sets how much power you can pull, which links directly to PCS sizing.
Cycle life and test conditions
Cycle life is quoted at a specific depth of discharge, rate, and temperature. A "6000-cycle" claim means little without those conditions. Always read the fine print and map it to your actual duty.
Operating window and safety
The temperature range, maximum continuous current, and recommended SoC band describe safe operation. Designing inside these limits — not at their edge — is what protects life and safety.
What the sheet does not say
Datasheets rarely show real-world degradation under your duty, installation losses, or system-level efficiency. Those belong in your model, built from the rated figures as a starting point.
