PCS / Inverter Selection Guide

The converter decides what your storage can do. Match its rating, topology, and grid services to the application.

01Introduction

What this article covers

The power conversion system is where battery energy becomes usable AC. Selecting it well means matching power, features, and environment to the job the storage must do.

02Technical

Power rating

Rate the PCS for the site's continuous and peak power needs, not just the battery capacity. A mismatch — too small and the battery is throttled, too large and you pay for unused capability — hurts both performance and cost.

03Technical

Topology and isolation

Transformerless and isolated topologies trade efficiency, size, and fault behaviour differently. The right choice follows the site's voltage, protection scheme, and any grounding requirements.

04Technical

Grid services

Beyond charge/discharge, modern PCS units can provide reactive-power support and — in advanced configurations — grid-forming behaviour. If the site may ever island or support the grid, specify those capabilities deliberately.

05Technical

Environment and cooling

Ambient temperature, altitude, and enclosure rating decide reliability. A PCS specified for the site's real environment avoids derating and nuisance trips in hot or dusty conditions.

06Technical

Matching to the battery

The PCS voltage window must suit the battery stack, and its controls must coordinate with the BMS. The converter and battery are one system; select them together, not separately.

11FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I size the PCS power?

From the site's continuous and peak power needs — not just battery capacity. Rate it so the battery is never throttled by the converter.

Do I need grid-forming?

Only if the site islands or must support grid voltage and frequency. For simple grid-tied use it is usually not required.

Should PCS and battery be selected together?

Yes. The PCS voltage window and controls must suit the battery stack and coordinate with the BMS.
