What the EMS actually does

The EMS is the decision-maker. It reads state-of-charge, generation, load, and tariff or fuel state, then dispatches the battery, PV, and generator to meet demand at lowest cost and risk. In grid-tied sites it optimises tariffs; in off-grid sites it keeps the lights on by balancing a finite energy budget through the day and night.

A microgrid typically runs in one of three modes: grid-tied (connected, optimising with the utility), islanded (disconnected, running autonomously), and hybrid (multiple sources blended). The control system must transition between them — for example, islanding seamlessly when the grid drops and resynchronising when it returns — without disturbing loads.

Dispatch strategies

Common strategies prioritise the cheapest or cleanest source first: solar when available, battery forbridging, and generator only to top up. The battery is the buffer that absorbs solar surplus and covers the night, while the generator starts only when the state-of-charge reaches a set floor. This is what drives down fuel run-hours.

Grid-forming PCS

In an islanded microgrid there is no utility to set voltage and frequency, so the PCS must form the grid itself. A grid-forming PCS establishes and holds stable voltage and frequency, lets sources connect and disconnect dynamically, and rides through disturbances. This capability is what makes a storage-led microgrid technically feasible.

Monitoring and visibility

Remote sites live or die by visibility. The EMS should expose state-of-charge, source contribution, alarms, and energy totals so operators can act before a problem becomes an outage. Good monitoring turns a fragile off-grid system into a managed, auditable asset.
